Sermon
(Scroll down to view "News")

All human history revolves around Jesus of Nazareth (for he is the one who saves us from our past and gives us a glorious future) Text: Luke 19:28-44, Matthew 21:10-11, Zechariah 9:9
Our message this morning is found in the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. This event was foretold by the prophet Zechariah in B.C. 487. The people of Jerusalem, much to the dismay of the Pharisee leaders, was being hailed as King. Sadly, many of these same people less than 4 days later would be crying out "crucify him."
We must make sure our faith is rooted in fact not feeling. That is why so many of this crowd were fickle followers. There is much to analyze in this portion of scripture, I would however, like to approach this subject in a different way than the traditional Palm Sunday sermon.
Jesus had indeed been acknowledged as King. Revelation 19:16 reveals Jesus as the KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. Philippians' 2;5-11 SHOW US Christ our servant as having "a name which is above every name" and that "at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,...And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord," the humble prophet from Nazareth was and is the greatest single figure in all human history. The truth is, without Jesus, man would have no past, no present and certainly, no future.
I want us to view Jesus this morning not merely as a historical person, not simply as the suffering servant who took our place, dying for our sins, nor shall we focus on his resurrection from the dead, (we will save that for next week!) I want us to consider what Jesus means to us. Let us consider what Christ means to us personally. I believe we shall see that without Christ we have no future. Yet, because of Jesus, once we are born again all the sins of the past are not even recorded in God's history book! With Jesus our present life is able to be abundant and our future is one of glory and peace.
1) Jesus the creator of all history- John 1:1-3, Genesis 1:1 Jesus is God. God created all life. Jesus is the source of all life. This fact should be the basis of all discussions on life issues. Abortion, euthanasia and capital punishment have been reduced to political arguments guided by human reasoning and feeling. It is not important what we think on such matters, for since God gave life it is not for us to decide who lives and who dies. God values life above all things. To God we are priceless treasures. For any of us to play God with other human life is sacrilege. On the other hand, for us to allow bloodthirsty murderers to live when God has decreed such to be worthy of death is foolishness.
Without Jesus there would be no history of any kind. None of us would be here. Based on that truth we should all look to Jesus to show us what to do with the life he has given all of us.
2) Jesus is the creator of all mankind - Genesis 1:26, 27 Man was originally made in the image of God, therefore, anything that we do that is contrary to the will of God distorts the nature of God. This past Father's day we pointed out that since God describes himself as the father, ungodly, abusive men have confused may children about God's character. Those of us who are saved have been restored into the family of God. We have been returned spiritually to bear the image of God. As we walk in the Spirit we are able to show others what Jesus is like. Through our faith the world sees Jesus.
3) Jesus changes the course of human history - 1st Corinthians 15:20-23 due to Adam's sin all people since then have been born with a sin nature. This sin nature results in all of us who reach the age of accountability (being able to know right from wrong) commit sin. Sin brings death. Physical death is something tangible that we can all understand, yet,   just as real as physical death is spiritual death. Spiritual death is the death that is the ultimate fate for all without saving faith in Christ. Romans 3:23 tells us we are all sinners, Romans 6:23 tells us our sin brings death, Revelation 20:14, 15 tell us spiritual death, which is the second death, results in eternal separation from God in hell. Jesus changed our fate from death and damnation to eternal life and blessing. Jesus gives us a new future.
4) Jesus is our future - 1st John 5:12-13 explain that with Jesus as our savior we have eternal life as our future, Colossians 4:3 says "When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. Because our future is secure with Christ, we have joy in our lives now. In fact, our entire life is Christ. The scripture does not identify Jesus as the most important aspect of our life, it tells us Jesus is our life! That is why Paul the Apostle said "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." (Philippians 1:21). It is because of our certain future that Paul addressed his fellow servants as those "whose names are in the book of life." (Philippians 4:3). May we personally acknowledge Jesus as our savior, as our Lord and as our King. And may the life of Christ transform our lives to display the love, grace and power of God.
For all human history revolves around Jesus, may our lives revolve around Christ. AMEN.
